A school board member in Washington County, Tennessee is now facing criminal charges after video footage of his behavior toward a teenage girl at an April 2 board meeting went viral online. Keith Ervin, 59, who has served on the Washington County Board of Education since 2006, was captured on camera placing his arm around a high school student named Hannah, making a sexually suggestive remark about her appearance, and then putting his hand on her back while onlookers laughed uncomfortably. The incident was not addressed during the meeting itself, but public reaction exploded once the clip spread across social media.

Criminal Charges Filed

According to court records, Ervin has been formally charged with simple assault for the physical contact he made with the minor. He is scheduled to appear in court on August 7. The board, acknowledging it lacks the legal authority under Tennessee law to remove an elected official from office, voted to censure Ervin — the most serious disciplinary step available to school boards in the state. Board Chair Annette Buchanan publicly condemned his conduct, calling his words and actions toward the student shocking and completely out of line with the district’s standards.

The Student Fights Back

Hannah did not stay silent. On May 7, she delivered a four-minute statement directly to the board members, holding each of them accountable for their failure to intervene. She described Ervin’s behavior as unwelcome, sexist, and demeaning, and pointed out that he had never behaved similarly toward male student representatives. She also rejected what she described as hollow, self-serving apologies from those who had cited religious reasons for offering forgiveness. She concluded her remarks by calling the board members cowards and thanking them — with bitter irony — for showing the community exactly how much they valued student safety.

Ervin attempted to reframe the incident in an interview with NBC News, claiming he had simply meant the girl was performing well and gaining momentum — not making any comment about her looks. The explanation was met with widespread skepticism from the public, with many people pointing out that the context and his physical contact made the intent impossible to misread.

Community Demands Accountability

An online petition calling for Ervin’s resignation has gathered over 7,300 signatures. Parents confronted board members at an emergency meeting held on April 8, demanding he step down. As of now, Ervin has refused to vacate his seat. The school district released a statement affirming its commitment to student safety and confirming it is cooperating fully with law enforcement as the case proceeds through the courts.

A Broader Conversation

The case has reignited wider discussions about how adults in positions of educational authority treat young people, what accountability actually looks like for elected officials, and why institutions so often wait for public pressure before responding to misconduct that should have been addressed the moment it occurred.
